The presentation forms part of ESASTAP’s efforts to identify, and stimulate a dialogue on, research areas where potential exists for mutually beneficial cooperation between South African and European researchers. In this context, South Africa’s unique experience related to the country’s transition from apartheid to multiracial democracy, offers interesting opportunities for research cooperation and dialogue with Europe. Indeed, better understanding the dynamics related to changing identities in societies in transition is a shared research focus for South Africa and Europe. Addressing questions such as why intolerance still thrives was, for example, identified as one of the major societal challenges which European socio-economic sciences and humanities research should address.
