Science and technology (S&T) has long been one of the most active areas of
cooperation of the Strategic Partnership between South Africa and the European
Union. The Science at the Summit programme is accordingly presented by the
South African Department of Science and Technology (DST), in collaboration with
several European partners, on the occasion of the Third South Africa – European
Union Summit, taking place in Brussels on 28 September 2010, in order to
provide a platform for:
- Highlighting and celebrating the successes of past S&T partnerships between
South Africa and the EU;
- Exploring the potential for and planning for new initiatives to enhance S&T
cooperation between South Africa and the EU; and
- Ensuring collaboration in research and innovation is linked to and contributes
to the strengthening of the overall Strategic Partnership between South Africa
and the EU, especially with regard to economic and development
cooperation.
Running from Monday 27 to Wednesday 29 September 2010, the Science at the
Summit programme will comprise a series of seminars, each highlighting different
strategic dimensions of S&T cooperation between South Africa and the EU.
The
themes of these events have been chosen because of their topical nature and the
priority policy focus they currently enjoy in South Africa or Europe.
The Science at the Summit programme is presented as part of the European South
African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP) a Support Action funded under the European Union’s Seventh
Framework Programme for Research (FP7) and implemented by the DST to promote
cooperation in S&T between South Africa and the EU.
